Hair Loss

Because the concept of beauty has become so important to our society, there is perhaps no one occurrence that can so devastate the self esteem of a person than the loss of their hair. Hair loss is a phenomenon that has occupied a lot of people's time and money over the years, and a major focus of scientific research. SRED credits have gone to many Canadian companies trying to find a root cause and final cure for various types of baldness.

The problem with hair loss is that although it is something which has been around since humans first came on the scene, no one is quite sure how the actual mechanisms of baldness work in certain cases. In some, the cause can be identified; diet, stress, diseases and medication can all play a factor. But when it comes to male pattern baldness, the most pervasive of the hair loss causes, scientists remain in the dark.

The scientific name for male pattern baldness is androgenetic alopecia. This is at the cause of 95% of all hair loss cases, so it's likely that the Oshawa realtor you see with the receding hairline or your science teacher from high school with an unfortunate hair piece has been affected by this common development.

While hair loss is not pleasant for any man, the fact is that many can get over it as society in general tends to look past men's looks in order to judge them. A man with a thriving gold mutual fund portfolio usually still has women on his doorstep even if he is balding. Some women even find it more appealing. In fact, many people tend to overlook male pattern baldness in men altogether, unless the matter is specifically brought up.

Unfortunately and unfairly, this is not always the case for women. While men display AA more often than women, it is a fact that some women do develop this type of hair loss. Because of the emphasis placed on women's hair, this can be devastating for affected women, who often feel so embarrassed that they begin to communicate with the world at a distance, such as through a Cabbagetown blog.

AA only affects about 2% of women who experience hair loss. Far more common is the female equivalent, which affects women once they pass 40 years of age. As with AA, female pattern baldness is caused by an elevated amount of testosterone within the body.

Much of the information you will hear about hair loss is based on rumour, and not on fact. One big myth about hair loss is that it comes from the mother's side of the family; in fact, baldness can come from either parent or either parent's side, and the hair style of the relatives you know may have no bearing on your own at all.

There are many businesses which prey on the insecurities of those suffering from hair loss. Midtown Toronto condominiums and elsewhere are filled with bathroom vanities packed with cures for this incurable problem. Generally, any easy fix can be considered to be a scam. There are some surgical procedures which can replace lost hair, but all must be carefully researched before committing your time and money to them.
